School… Am I right? I was going to start off by telling you that returning to school is “fun” (and it is!) But I’m a at bit of a loss: A word like “fun” doesn’t totally fit the full scope of the post-secondary experience. I think, as adults, we can agree it's got a little more nuance than that. Even as a kid, I wouldn’t necessarily describe the return to class as outright enjoyable. I mean, university is fun, as much as it is complicated and sort of annoying and stressful.
A better word for your time at SFU would be something like “transformational” or "evolutionary.” Obviously, post-secondary is an era of transition, which sort of goes without saying, but is still noteworthy nonetheless. I think sometimes people may take this evolutionary element of their time in post-secondary for granted, in the sense that we are aware of it happening but not necessarily its implications or direct outcomes; You’re changing, but into what?
The truth is, it can be especially hard at a school like SFU, where some 35,000 of us commute to and from class, to find time outside lectures and tutorials to meet people in our programs and build an on-campus “life.” It’s not that you’re not trying; everyone is; it's more so that opportunities for meaningful personal connection in this digital age have become, ironically, very scarce. You make a friend in class, and it turns out they live six towns away, and suddenly you’re relegated to a “relationship” consisting only of liking each other’s stories. I know I’m not alone in thinking it’s just not practical for someone like me, who has to drive 40 minutes one-way to campus, to mill about in hopes of stumbling into a new friend: Scheduled or planned meetups can help mitigate that hurdle, but that requires you to know some people already -- or go somewhere with student mixers and social events pre-planned for you…Wink wink.
We at the CMNSU (which, admittedly, I hate saying because it makes us sound like an insurance agency) get this. Spokesperson-lingo aside, “we” are really just a group of your classmates and peers who have had similar experiences with the university life we’ve been offered; hence, we focus on creating in-person events and online resources for you to further your social, academic, and professional life. This year, we’re kicking off our social calendar with EVOLVE!
Named for the growth a student experiences over their time in university, EVOLVE is a CMNSU staple: our take on FROSH, EVOLVE is a years-long tradition of hosting a classy-casual student mixer for all students of all years involved with or interested in communications studies. Hosted at the end of September, EVOLVE is a zero-stakes social event and an awesome place to meet some people in your program, connect with professors, and get some great goodies from our very generous sponsors! EVOLVE will be held from 6-8:30 pm on September 24th in the Student Union Building. Tickets are on sale now, and we’d love to see you there!
